I want it Wednesday,

This book isn't new but I thought the subject matter was powerful. Its a Bargain Book right now on Amazon and I'm going to buy a copy.

Summary:

At nineteen years of age, Marvelyn Brown was lying in a stark white hospital bed at Tennessee Christian Medical Center, feeling hopeless. A former top track and basketball athlete, she was in the best shape of her life, but she was battling a sudden illness in the intensive care unit. Doctors had no idea what was going on. It never occurred to Brown that she might be HIV positive.

Having unprotected sex with her Prince Charming had set into swift motion a set of circumstances that not only landed her in the fight of her life, but also alienated her from her community. Rather than give up, however, Brown found a reason to fight and a reason to live.

Nope.

Eun-Gyo Sung isn't a very good student. She doesn't pay attention, falls asleep in class, gets into a fight and is suspended from school. A mysterious young man saves her from getting struck by a train.

The strange man kidnaps Eun-Gyo Sung and brings her into the past. It's up to her to help him find the seven blade sword and save his land.

The first volume of every graphic novel must do a few few things: A. create a captivating story. B. introduce the characters C. make you want more.

However, with Legend I'm not sure I felt any of those things listed above. The story was decent but nothing that made me want to pick up volume II. Eun-Gyo Sung was annoying along with whiny and she was an air head. After finishing the first volume I was glad it was over and I didn't want to read the second one.

I'm sure this is going to bloom into one of those romance books. the ditsy girl falls in love with the mysterious young man. There is also a little magic and adventure thrown into the story. Students who enjoy those elements may like Legend. Frankly, I'm skipping this series.

Historical Fiction Friday

This book caught my attention because it's one of those rare books that's not about the Tudors. GASP! Who would have thought? There can be historical fiction books without the Tudors. Yes, I am being snarky. To be fair, I have to say that YA historical fiction seems to be well rounded unlike adult historical fiction that focuses heavily on the Tudors.

I don't know much about Joan's story but this book sounds interesting. And the cover is cool looking too. It hit shelves on June 8th and I need to get a copy.

Summary:

Joan’s mother is Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine, the most beautiful woman in the world. Her father is Henry II, the king of England and a renowned military leader. She loves them both—so what is she to do when she’s forced to choose between them? As her parents’ arguments grow ever more vicious, Joan begins to feel like a political pawn.

When her parents marry her off to the king of Sicily, Joan finds herself stuck with a man ten years her senior. She doesn’t love her husband, and she can’t quite forget her childhood crush, the handsome Lord Raymond.

As Joan grows up, she begins to understand that her parents’ worldview is warped by their political ambitions, and hers, in turn, has been warped by theirs. Is it too late to figure out whom to trust? And, more importantly, whom to love?

I want it Wednesday

In today's spotlight we have an upcoming release. I read the summary for this book and it just sounds cool. The cover has a steampunk feel, but the summary doesn't indicate that. I haven't read anything by this author before, but I'm dying for this one. I'm a Victorian Era freak anyway.

This book will be released on August 31, 2010

Summary:

When sixteen-year-old Tessa Gray crosses the ocean to find her brother, her destination is England, the time is the reign of Queen Victoria, and something terrifying is waiting for her in London's Downworld, where vampires, warlocks and other supernatural folk stalk the gaslit streets. Only the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the world of demons, keep order amidst the chaos.

Kidnapped by the mysterious Dark Sisters, members of a secret organization called The Pandemonium Club, Tessa soon learns that she herself is a Downworlder with a rare ability: the power to transform, at will, into another person. What's more, the Magister, the shadowy figure who runs the Club, will stop at nothing to claim Tessa's power for his own.

Friendless and hunted, Tessa takes refuge with the Shadowhunters of the London Institute, who swear to find her brother if she will use her power to help them. She soon finds herself fascinated by—and torn between—two best friends: James, whose fragile beauty hides a deadly secret, and blue-eyed Will, whose caustic wit and volatile moods keep everyone in his life at arm's length . . . everyone, that is, but Tessa. As their search draws them deep into the heart of an arcane plot that threatens to destroy the Shadowhunters, Tessa realizes that she may need to choose between saving her brother and helping her new friends save the world. . . . and that love may be the most dangerous magic of all.

A new version of The Little Mermaid manhwa style

This book is a fun read. It’s about a young merman who falls in love with Princess Evyione . He is so taken with her that he gives up his voice in order to become human. However, the Sea witch tells him he must make the princess fall in love with him or else there is a price to pay. Added to the mix is a young man who is trying to help Princess Evyione. But is he honorable? I see a love triangle in the future.

I really enjoyed this book. The art was nice and it looks like it takes place during the 18th century. The love story is interesting as well. However, I can't find volume two. It was going to come out on September 16, 2009, but that date has come and gone. If anyone knows how to find volume 2 please let me know.

I'm hooked on this title and I want to read more!

Teen girls will really like this book because of the romance, handsome men and pretty clothes.

Historical Fiction Friday

Michelle Moran get's the spotlight on this Historical Fiction Friday(posted on Saturday. Sorry). This is her latest book which doesn't hit the stores until 2011. As you can see she has left the ancient world behind and is writing about the French Revolution. I'm looking forward to her latest novel because I love how she writes. I also know a lot of teens enjoy her stuff too.

It comes out in April 2011.

I want it Wednesday

For this week I am featuring an upcoming book entitled Halo. Love the cover, and I won't lie it's the first thing I noticed. Then I read the summary and thought it sounded cool.

Summary:

Three angels are sent down to bring good to the world: Gabriel, the warrior; Ivy, the healer; and Bethany, a teenage girl who is the least experienced of the trio. But she is the most human, and when she is romantically drawn to a mortal boy, the angels fear she will not be strong enough to save anyone—especially herself—from the Dark Forces.

Is love a great enough power against evil?

This book goes on sale August 31, 2010

Historical Fiction Friday: Rebirth of the 1920s

The 1920s are back! A few posts back I mentioned that Anna Godbersen has a new series coming out and that it takes place during the 1920s. Well, she isn't the only one. Lila Fine has(what I believe is a series) coming out as well. The first book in the series is Vixen. Libba Bray author of A Great and Terrible Beauty has signed a new deal for a supernatural 1920s series(3 books? I've heard 4 also) called The Diviners(old news but I'm posting it anyway). I'm thrilled. Going Bovine wasn't my type of book so I'm excited she is going back to what she does best. And of course there is Bright Young Things by Anna Godbersen, which is the first book to hit the shelves showcasing this new rockin' trend.

As someone who loves historical fiction and who is also wild about the 1920s I can't wait for these novels!

Release Dates:
Bright Young Things October 12, 2010
Vixen December 14, 2010
The Diviners Fall 2012
